Silver Birch Tree

Saving this beautiful Silver Birch Tree

Earlier last week JJ&B attended a property in Petts Wood, which at the front of this garden houses a stunning Silver Birch Tree.  Unfortuantely Ivy had been growing up the trunk of the tree and preventing the tree from receiving it’s nutrients needed from the soil.  Along with our recommendation our customer agreed for the Ivy to be removed in attempt to save the tree.

Heres some more on Ivy…

What is it?

Ivy is a woody stemmed, self-clinging climber that can grow quickly to cover fences, walls and buildings. It is a cause for concern owing to its rapid pace of growth and worries about potential damage to the support structure.

Appearance

Ivy is recognised by its dense, evergreen foliage. In its climbing state it has three- to five-lobed glossy leaves.

It attaches itself to supports by producing aerial roots along the stems. When the stems are pulled away from the wall, they often leave behind the unsightly root ends, that persist and can often only be removed with wire brushes or pressure washing.

The problem

Self-clinging climbers such as Boston ivy and Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus sp.) do not usually cause damage to wall surfaces, but common or English ivy (Hedera helix sp.) supports itself by aerial roots and where these penetrate cracks or joints they may cause structural damage. Sound masonry is unaffected.

Its dense cover can hide defects in the fabric of the building and hinder maintenance work. Ivy may also provide access for intruders and harbour pests such as mice.

Where brickwork is sound, the main problem is to keep growth away from gutters and paint work.

It has been suggested that vegetation attached to walls could lead to dampness resulting from slower drying conditions following rain. This may be plausible on a south-west facing wall where the rain is driven by prevailing winds. However, other sources suggest that such plants will have a slight drying effect on mortar and will also provide some degree of insulation in winter, particularly evergreen ivies covering exposed north and east-facing walls.

Large climbers can pose a risk to buildings. Such problems are most likely with older property, those with shallow foundations and those built on clay soils.

If you have Ivy growing in an unwanted area, or need to bring some control to your Ivy feel free to get in contact for a free quotation either by email or by calling 0800 072 7755

Size Doesn’t Matter

At JJ&B Treecare Ltd we don’t always focus on larger trees.  We also prune and maintain  smaller trees.

Size really does not matter, no job is too big or too small.

Last week our team went to work on this small Weeping Silver Birch Tree.

JJ&B have maintained this tree for some years now and it was again due for thinning maintenanace which we carried out.  We thinned the branches out by 25% removing all minor dead wood, decayed wood, rubbing and crossing branches.

Tree Of Heaven

We have been carrying out pruning works on 3 Tree Of Heaven ( Ailanthus) at Wentworth Primary School, Dartford.  Recommended by Kent County Council as approved tree surgeons.

As you will be able to see in the before and after pictures, the difference it makes once all dead wood, decayed wood,  rubbing and crossing branches have been removed.  This will allow the tree to regenerate more healthily and in a uniform fashion.

Not only does this put the customer’s mind at peace, but in this situation the parents of the children who were attending school on this day.  We pride ourselves in not only paying great attention to the tree we are working on but also the job as a whole.

Willow Tree

Today was a very sad day in Petts Wood, Kent.   For many years now we have maintained this stunning Willow Tree, due to being heavily decayed throughout the centre core of the tree it became unstable and needed carefully dismantling. Several fungi cause wood decay in willow trees.  Wood decays are often invisible diseases, rotting the interior of the tree’s trunk and weakening the tree so that it can fall without warning.

There are many reasons for decay, one being harsh and incorrect pruning.  Though we have looked after this tree for 5 years now, unfortunately by the time we took over the damage had already been caused. We tried our very best to maintain the tree, but it was past the point of saving.

At JJ&B Treecare we cannot stress enough the importance of having the correct pruning management carried out on your trees.  If you feel a Willow Tree or any tree on your land or garden could be suffereing with decay please contact us for a FREE HEALTH CHECK.  To get straight through to the man himself who has been in the industry for many years and prides himself in gaining the very best knowledge call Joe on 07966 265 373 or email a member of our admin team to arrange a call back today.
